Beginner FAQ
Which mode should I play first? Story or Sandbox?
I would recommend getting some experience in sandbox mode first. At least until you feel comfortable surviving in the wilderness. I did that and I feel like I'm able to enjoy the story mode because of it.
Why do I keep dying? I don't even know what I'm doing wrong.
I know, it's frustrating. But that's just how this game works at first. Plan on dying several times before you start to get a hang of things. The biggest hurdle is just figuring out the game mechanics. To help you get there a bit faster, check out this guide on how dying and recovering works.
How big is this game?
It's quite large for an independently developed game. It took me about 150 game days in the sandbox to explore all the "zones" on Voyageur mode. The developers are still adding new regions as well. So I don't think anyone really knows how big it will eventually become.
Are the zones the same for the sandbox and story modes?
Most of the zones are the same, with a few new ones in story mode. However, the common zones are slightly different in some locations.
Can I win this game?
Only in story mode (once all the chapters have been released). The sandbox mode is just for surviving as long as you can.
What am I supposed to do in sandbox mode?
Survive. That's about it. Survival is such an instinctual part of who we are, there's just something primal and satisfying about imagining a scenario that would test your mettle.
What is a sandbox?
A sandbox is an "open world" where you can go anywhere and do whatever you want (limited by game mechanics, of course). There's no storyline, no definable goals, and essentially no restrictions.
I'm new. Which mode should I start on?
Voyageur mode is the best way to start, in my opinion. It starts out very challenging, but then becomes relatively easy once you've mastered the game mechanics. Once you feel comfortable with how everything works, moving up to Stalker or straight to Interloper is the next step.
Is there a limitation on how long I can survive?
Currently there are no limits in sandbox mode. At least no one has survived long enough to find oneā¦
Where's the map in sandbox mode?
Unlike story mode, sandbox mode requires you to create your own map as you explore. You must do this with charcoal you find in burned-out fires.
Does it get easier?
When you're learning the ropes it's quite difficult. But once you figure out how the game works, it will eventually "click". My first attempt lasted 30 minutes (about 5 game hours). But every time I started over I lasted even longer. On my 6th attempt I lasted nine game days. Finally, on my 7th try, everything seemed to click and I lasted well over a hundred days.
How do I find new regions?
The only way is to explore. You'll stumble on their entrances eventually. So far they're always on the edges of the region and typically look like canyons or caves (there are a few "mini zones" you might find that are not on the edge).
